The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has been declared the winner of Saturday’s governorship election after acquiring the highest number of votes.
The announcement was made by the INEC Returning Officer for the state’s election, Mr Faruk Kuta who serves as the vice chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State.
Mr. Monday Okpebholo emerged as the winner after winning 11 of the 18 local government areas of Edo state.
He was declared the winner with 291,667 votes to defeat Mr Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who secured the highest votes in 7 local governments, came second in the election with 247,274 votes.
Meanwhile, the candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Olumide Akpata, came third with 22,763 votes.
“That Monday Okpebholo of the APC, having satisfied all the requirements of law and scored majority of the lawful votes, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” Mr Kuta declared.
However, across the 3 senatorial districts in Edo state, under Edo central which has 5 Local government areas, the People’s Democratic Party(PDP) won with 54,813 votes.
Also, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) had the highest number of votes from the Edo South senatorial district. The party had 115,502 votes cast, while the All Progressive Congress had 112,088 votes and the Labour Party (LP) had 15,230 votes.
However, the All Progressive Congress (APC) had the highest number of votes in the Edo North senatorial district. The district has 6 LGAs.
Edo Governorship Election 2024
The Edo State governorship election was held on Saturday, September 21, 2024, with 17 candidates vying for the position across the 4,519 polling units in the state.
Of the 17 candidates, there were 16 men and one woman who participated in the just concluded election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission announced on Tuesday, 17th September that out of 2,629,025 registered voters in Edo State, 2,249,780 Permanent Voters Cards were collected while 379,245 PVC remained uncollected before the election.

Also, Udoh David, African Action Congress; Akhalamhe Amiemenoghena, Zenith Labour Party; Osirame Edeipo, Boot Party; Accord Party, Iyere Kennedy; Aner Abdullahi Aliu ,Social Democratic Party; Osarenren Derek Izedonmwen, African Democratic Congress; Paul Okungbowa Ovbokhan, Young Progressive Party.
Meanwhile, Patience Key Ndidi of the People’s Redemption Party was the only female governorship candidate that participated in the just concluded election.
