Jola Adekola Initiative for Retired, Ageing, and Aged (JAIRAA) in partnership with Dataphyte is set to host a Roundtable themed “Access and Inclusion for the Elderly” today 25th November 2021.
The event also doubles as the launch of the not-for-profit setup to advocate for the rights of the Elderly in Nigeria and will hold at the Rotunda, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja by 10:00 am.
This inaugural roundtable and launch event will examine the predominant challenges faced by the elderly and discuss practical, long-term cross-cutting policy interventions as well as low-hanging fruits that will produce quick gains in improving access and inclusion for this section of the population.
It will specifically agree on issues faced by the older demographic, including access to services, ageism and the lack of a clearly communicated, policy-driven strategy by the country for the care of the very vulnerable and often ignored group.
The Founder and Executive Director, Ambassador Jolaade Helen Adekola ( FNIM, FCILG), a retired diplomat, said “JAIRAA is a much needed intervention in the country. A country is only as good as the attention it pays to the vulnerable within its borders and the retired, ageing and aged citizens of Nigeria fit within this vulnerable group. Unfortunately they have long been overlooked and not factored into sustainable development conversations.”
She said further that JAIRAA’s programming will take a multipronged approach by giving voice to the issues of the Elderly as well as connecting the Elderly to much needed services and support that are otherwise hard to find.
The Honorobale Minister of Foreign Affairs is the special guest of honor at the Roundtable and will be joined by other important stakeholders critical to charting a course forward that is inclusive of the older generation.
