According to the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC), these are the states with the highest number of women in the houses of assembly.
Cross River with 25 seats has the highest number of women with 5 women, Ekiti, Enugu, and Ogun follow with 4 women, and then Bayelsa, Ebonyi and Lagos with 3 women.
Akwa Ibom, Benue and Delta have 26, 30, and 28 seats, with two women each in their respective state houses of assembly.
Overall, Nigeria’s showing in terms of women in elective positions is still poor. According to Dataphyte’s Gender in Nigeria, women have held only about 7% of seats in the Senate and House of Representatives. The numbers are worse in the states with a mere 5.3% representation in state legislatures.
These 10 states may have the highest number of women in their state assemblies but it is in no way representative and shows more work needs to be done towards female participation in politics.
